OBJECTIVE:
The lesson helps children learn that Jesus Christ set a perfect example of kindness and love. By showing love to others we can find happiness and joy.

TO MAKE: Print or copy the activity.

ACTIVITY:

Share with children John 13:34-35 scripture above. Tell them that Jesus set the perfect example of love and kindness. Jesus showed His love by serving and blessing the poor, sick, and distressed.

Jesus told His disciples “Love one another, as I have loved you.”  ⇐ (John 15:11-12) ⇒ “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”

Help children memorize the poster: “I love my brothers and sisters! I can be a popcorn brother or sister! I will quickly ‘pop’ up to help, ‘pop’ a smile, or ‘pop’ out my arms for a loving hug.”Sitting around a bowl of popcorn (see TREAT below), talk to children about sharing by saying, “What if I popped this bowl of popcorn and decided to eat it all by myself without sharing it with you? Would this be showing love?”

Talk about the Home Activity: “Let’s talk about all the ways I can show love and help my brothers and sisters. Let’s learn how to do a group hug and express our love.”

THOUGHT TREAT Popcorn treats. Share a bowl of popcorn in paper cups or on napkins. Talk about sharing. Perhaps have the children take turns serving the child next to them a scoopful of popcorn. Sing the “Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree” song (HERE).

DISCUSSION POINTS (Scriptures, Jesus Christ, loving others)

• You are young and learning how Jesus and Heavenly Father want you to act. You can be an example to others by the things you do. When you pray, listen to your parents, or help someone, you are doing what Jesus wants you to do.

• How do you feel when you show love to your brother or sister? Loving others can make us happy.  Jesus said, “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” ⇐  (John 15:11-12) ⇒ “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.”

• Did you know that when you help someone, you learn to love them more? It’s true. Try and see for yourself sometime.

• How can you help your brother or sister?

• If your sister or brother is sad you can help them feel better with a smile, a hug, or saying “I love you.”

A KIND BROTHER – from McGuffey’s Second Reader

A boy was once sent from home to take a basket of things to his grandmother. The basket was so full that it was very heavy. So, his little brother went with him, to help carry the load.

They put a pole under the handle of the basket, and each then took hold of an end of the pole. In this way, they could carry the basket very nicely.

Now the older boy thought, “My brother Tom does not know about this pole. If I slip the basket near him, his side will be heavy, and mine light; but if the basket is in the middle of the pole, it will be as heavy for me as it is for him. Tom does not know this as I do. But I will not do it. It would be wrong, and I will not do what is wrong.”

Then he slipped the basket quite near his own end of the pole. His load was now heavier than that of his little brother. Yet he was happy; for he felt that he had done right. Had he deceived his brother, he would not have felt at all happy.

Kindness

Drop a stone into the water –
In a moment it is gone,
But there are a hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on.

Say an unkind word this moment
In a moment it is gone
But there are a hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on.

Say a word of cheer and splendor
In a moment it is gone
But there are a hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on.

Help another with their burden
In a moment it is gone
But there are a hundred ripples
Circling on and on and on.
