What do children need to learn about obeying their parents?

Colossians 3:20
“Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”

If we obey our parents, God blesses us with safety and happiness.

OBJECTIVE:
Tell children that God has given our parents the responsibility to teach us His commandments and take care of our physical needs. They are to protect us from harm. Once we learn these things we need to be responsible for taking care of ourselves. So, we need to listen and obey. If we obey our parents, God blesses us with safety and happiness.

TO MAKE Print or copy the activity poster to color.

ACTIVITY:

• Talk about the poster, saying, “I can be obedient. When my mother/father calls (call out) me, quickly (clap hands) I’ll obey!”

I can be obedient. poster or coloring page

• Talk about the Home Activity (on the poster):  Tell me ways that I can be obedient. Help me to understand why, and praise me when I do.

THOUGHT TREAT: Obedience orange. Peel several oranges and split each between two children. Have children pull segments apart and, as they eat each piece, name ways they can obey. Say, “We can trust that what God and our parents ask us to do is right. When we obey them, we will be happy.”

SENSITIVE ISSUES. Keep the conversations open with children so you can be sensitive to areas where they may not want to obey their parents. Then, consult with a professional if you sense there is abuse.

DISCUSSION POINTS (Obedience, Parents)

Jesus obeyed His Father, and He wants us to be obedient too. God, our Heavenly Father, has given us parents to teach us His commandments. He gave Jesus earthly parents also, to teach and guide Him.

• Because our parents and Jesus love us they help us with our SPIRITUAL and PHYSICAL Needs:

— Our SPIRITUAL needs bring us happiness. These are the teachings of Jesus. Our parents teach us to obey Heavenly Father’s commandments. They teach us how to work and take care of God’s earth. They teach us how to treat other people. They help us make good friends.

— Our PHYSICAL needs help us feel good, comfortable, and safe. Our parents provide a home, food, and clothing for us. They help us exercise so we can become stronger. Our parents teach us how to have good habits like getting dressed, washing our faces, brushing our teeth, eating well, sleeping, and more.

• When we obey our parents and God we are blessed with safety and happiness. In Ephesians 6:1 we read, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”

• In the scriptures, like The Beatitudes, Jesus taught us how to be happy. Jesus especially loved the little children and had them brought to him so He could talk to them and bless them.
