The Book of Mormon - Another Testament of Jesus Christ typesetting poster
Help youth to be grateful that the Book of Mormon is available for them to read and study.
6 Visuals (Color and Black & white) with instructions.
ACTIVITY: Typesetting Poster
Remind youth that the Book of Mormon was first published by setting the metal type by hand. It was a lot of work, but it was worth the effort to make the Book of Mormon available to people everywhere.
Let the youth set type by placing the letters to read: “THE BOOK OF MORMON: ANOTHER TESTAMENT OF JESUS CHRIST” in the spaces provided on the poster. To typeset the poster, have the youth cut out letters needed to “set the type,” place spaces where necessary, and then color the poster.
This activity “TYPESETTING POSTER” matches with the preparation 3 and attention activity (in the Doctrine and Covenants Lesson 10 below).
TO MAKE Print or copy the poster and letters for each youth.
THOUGHT TREAT: Typesetter Pancakes. Ahead of time, shape and cook pancakes in letter shapes that start with something you might read in the Book of Mormon, e.g., “M” for Moroni, “T” tree of life. The batter could be colored to represent a person (pink), place (blue), or thing (yellow color). Youth must find something that represents the letter pancake they are eating in the book and read about it. OPTION: The topics could be planned and written ahead for each letter with possible hints to give youth.
TESTIMONY:
Express your gratitude that through the faith and efforts of the Prophet Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon was published so that we might study and learn from it. Bear your testimony that as we study the Book of Mormon we can draw closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Challenge the children to read and study the Book of Mormon and pray for a personal testimony of its truthfulness.
ACTIVITY INCLUDES – SCRIPTURE CHALLENGE CARD: Help children Search and Ponder this scripture card by filling in the blanks. PRINT this 5 x 7 scripture card from the pdf included with the above activity. You can punch the two holes on the left and tie a ribbon to attach cards or use two metal rings to connect cards.
D&C 20:8-9, 11-12
“And gave him power from on high, by the means which were before prepared, to translate the Book of Mormon;
Which contains a record of a fallen people, and the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles and to the Jews also;
Proving to the world that the holy scriptures are true, and that God does inspire men and call them to his holy work in this age and generation, as well as in generations of old;
Thereby showing that he is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. Amen.”
